Sabrina Khan
Owner and director, Maasi’s
Former teacher Sabrina Khan is the accidental restaurateur behind Maasi’s, a Pakistani café operating out of a church hall in Cardiff. Her career change began during lockdown when she sold samosas, made to her mother’s recipe on Instagram. Maasi’s (Punjabi for ‘auntie’) opened in July 2021, with an all-female team of home cooks – not a trained chef among them – making everything from scratch. In 2023, Maasi’s picked up the Best Street Food award in the BBC Food and Farming Awards, and Best of Cardiff in the Food Awards Wales. Sabrina was included in the Big Issue Changemakers 2024 and finalist as a Diversity in Representation Champion in the inaugural Mastering Diversity Awards 2024.
Y cyn-athrawes Sabrina Khan yw’r restaurateur damweiniol y tu ôl i Maasi’s, caffi o Bacistan sy’n gweithredu allan o neuadd eglwys yng Nghaerdydd. Dechreuodd newid ei gyrfa yn ystod y cyfnod clo pan werthodd samosas, a wnaed i rysáit ei mam, ar Instagram. Agorodd Maasi (Punjabi ar gyfer ‘modryb’) ym mis Gorffennaf 2021, gyda thîm holl-fenywaidd o gogyddion cartref – does dim un cogydd hyfforddedig yn eu plith – gan wneud popeth o’r dechrau. Yn 2023, enillodd Maasi y wobr Bwyd Stryd Gorau yng Ngwobrau Bwyd a Ffermio y BBC, a’r Gorau o Gaerdydd yng Ngwobrau Bwyd Cymru.
