Iris on the Move in Wrexham focuses on football, film, and women

This week (Thursday, 26 March) in Wrexham, as part of Iris on the Move, the organisers of the Iris Prize LGBTQ+ Film Festival – celebrating global stories and Cardiff charm are proud to present an evening of film, football, and discussion, supported by the North East Wales Community Cohesion Team. Changing the Game: Football, Identity and the Future of Wrexham is presented by Iris Prize x Tŷ Pawb in partnership with DIVA Film Festival.
The event will be hosted by Iris Prize Festival Director Berwyn Rowlands and features a short film programme screening, followed by a Q&A, and the Women Changing the Game / Who Gets to Belong in Football panel discussion. Speakers include Jacquie Lawrence (DIVA Film Festival), Cass Virdee (Filmmaker), Kate Hutchinson, (Trustee, Pride Cymru), Cameron Richards (Filmmaker), and Lou Englefield (Director of Pride Sports & Campaign). After the panel discussion, guests will be able to watch the Wales v Bosnia and Herzegovina game at the venue. There is free entry to the event, but booking is required to secure your seat (optional donation at checkout).

I’m thrilled we finish this stage of the tour in Wrexham with a special event in partnership with Diva Film Festival. “And what better way to finish than focusing on football in Wrexham on the same day Cymru might be one game closer to qualifying for the World Cup. “The screening and talk will hopefully help control our nerves on Thursday as we look forward to kick-off!”

18-year-old amateur footballer Sunny is struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. and as the final game of the season approaches, tensions begin to rise. He and fellow player Josh are attracted to one another, and will have to fight not only for what they want both on and off the pitch.

We’ll Go Down In History tells the story of TRUK United, a grassroots, proudly trans football club. Filmed over two years, it captures the team’s highs and lows on and off the pitch as they create a safe haven for their community in the face of rising transphobia. Solers United_still

Over the last two months, Iris on the Move, sponsored by S4C, has screened films in 30 venues, giving audiences the rare opportunity to engage directly with filmmakers, through Q+As, and festival staff. Festival Director Berwyn Rowlands has visited most venues, confirming Iris on the Move is about screening stories that the mainstream can sometimes ignore.
Two People Exchanging Saliva_2026 Oscars
This year there are two short film programmes: Iris 2025: Best Bits includes the 2025 Iris Prize winner (One Day This Kid), alongside Never Never Never, a film made by 2022 Iris Prize winner; and When Love Broke the Law includes Jackie and the 2026 Oscar-winning short Two People Exchanging Saliva. For the first time, we’ve also included a feature film in the tour, Rachel Dax’s feature documentary, 3000 Lesbians Go To York. It has screened in three venues already, with four more screenings planned in April, May, June and July.
