JOIN IRIS INDUSTRY DAY
For this instalment, Iris Talks Programmer and filmmaker Lewis Bayley turns interviewer, asking Roger and James to reflect on their acclaimed careers and creative partnership. The Team Deakins podcast, known for its candid explorations of cinematography and the film business, has previously hosted Barry Jenkins, Steven Soderbergh, Daniel Kaluuya, and Hans Zimmer.
The podcast episode was recorded in Devon, UK, where Roger Deakins and interviewer Lewis Bayley grew up.
Lewis Bayley said: “We spoke at length about growing up in the countryside in Devon, away from London and the UK’s cultural hubs, where careers in film and the creative industries can feel out of reach. It’s important for people to see these careers as viable, and Roger’s impact on the cinematic landscape is a powerful reminder of what’s possible. “Iris celebrates excellence in storytelling, and Roger and James truly exemplify that. This conversation offers a chance to turn the tables on them on their own podcast and hear them speak openly about their journey as collaborators and their creative approaches to some of most iconic films in cinema history.”Industry Day 2025 is a flagship event within the Iris Prize Festival (13–19 October), with panels and sessions with filmmakers, actors, executives, sales agents and distributors. The opening keynote speaker is Dawn Airey, a veteran of the industry having worked in television, media and technology for 30 years. With career spanning leadership roles at Channel 4, Channel 5, BskyB, and ITV, Dawn has been a driving force in shaping British broadcasting. Widely recognised as one of the most visible lesbians in UK media, she brings a unique perspective on representation, inclusion, and the future of queer storytelling.
Iris Prize Festival Director Berwyn Rowlands added: “We wanted the Iris Prize Industry Day to be a key event for media professionals focused on content creation. The quality of the guest speakers who will be joining us in Cardiff is truly impressive. We have contributors at the top of their game from all parts of the UK and much further afield including India, USA and Germany.”The festival’s wider programme includes Cactus Pears (Rohan Kanawade), winner of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize, and the much-anticipated Pillion (Harry Lighton), among a rich lineup of features and shorts.
