Elena Schmitz is the Head of Arts for the British Council in Wales, connecting Wales with the world through arts and culture. She has more than 20 years’ experience of working in senior roles in the Welsh arts sector, including contemporary circus company NoFit State Circus and Wales’ national company for literature development, Literature Wales. She is a British-German dual national, and an alumna of the Centre for British Studies at Humboldt University, Berlin, where she also briefly worked for the British Embassy. Before taking up her current role in summer 2024, she was a member of the British Council’s UK Arts and Creative Economy Advisory Group. She is living testament of the ultimate power of art to connect people and build trust, having learned English and been drawn to the UK originally through her passionate love of the Beatles when still in school in Germany.

Mae ganddi fwy nag 20 mlynedd o brofiad o weithio mewn rolau uwch yn sector celfyddydau Cymru, gan gynnwys cwmni syrcas cyfoes NoFit State Circus a chwmni cenedlaethol Cymru ar gyfer datblygu llenyddiaeth, Llenyddiaeth Cymru. Mae hi’n ddinesydd deuol Prydeinig-Almaenig, ac yn alumna o’r Ganolfan Astudiaethau Prydeinig ym Mhrifysgol Humboldt, Berlin, lle bu hefyd yn gweithio am gyfnod byr i Lysgenhadaeth Prydain. Cyn ymgymryd â’i rôl bresennol yn haf 2024, roedd hi’n aelod o Grŵp Ymgynghorol Celfyddydau a’r Economi Greadigol yn y DU y Cyngor Prydeinig. Mae hi’n dystiolaeth fyw o bŵer eithaf celf i gysylltu pobl ac adeiladu ymddiriedaeth, ar ôl dysgu Saesneg a chael ei denu i’r DU yn wreiddiol drwy ei chariad angerddol at y Beatles pan oedd hi’n dal yn yr ysgol yn yr Almaen.
