Organisers of the Iris Prize LGBTQ+ Film Festival are pleased to announce that Emily Sargent is the third recipient of the Iris Prize Documentary Film Finance Fund.
The Documentary Film Finance Fund was established by the Iris Prize LGBTQ+ Film Festival and is sponsored by OUTflix, and Aberystwyth University who have committed to invest £20,000 in the final film. The purpose of the fund is to support emerging British documentary filmmakers in telling unique LGBTQ+ stories (film running time: 22/25 minutes or 40 minutes) – with a particular emphasis on those from underrepresented groups.
Emily Sargent said: “I am so thrilled that the Iris Prize has chosen to support this film. I can't wait to shine a light on the work of the amazing Jackie Forster — a groundbreaking, totally unique LGBT+ rights campaigner whose underground operation helped the first queer women to have children.”
Emily’s film, Roaring Dyke, focusses on the life of activist and reporter Jackie Forster, who founded the lesbian magazine Sappho. At the time, she didn’t know it would be shot into the mainstream media in 1978 following the publication of a homophobic expose by the London Evening News on how the editors were connecting their readers with doctors willing to perform artificial insemination by donor. Anti-gay headlines were followed by protests by LGBT+ activists, fighting for the gay parents’ rights to what would become known as IVF.
Angela Clarke, BAFTA-nominated documentary filmmaker who has been looking after the shortlisting process said: “We are delighted to support Emily and can't wait to see what she does creatively to bring the remarkable story of Jackie Forster to life on screen.”

Philip Webb, COO of OUTtv, said: "Every year, we are astonished by the incredible entries we receive for the Iris Prize Documentary Fund, which delve into some of the most powerful stories within the LGBTQ+ community. This year's documentary is no different, illustrating the life of the inspirational activist Jackie Forster and her fight for gay rights in the UK.  It is an honour to continue our partnership with the Iris Prize and to provide a platform for these vital stories to reach audiences around the world."
Ira Putilova was the recipient of the second Documentary Film Finance Fund award. Their film, Bender Defenders, focusing on four members of a queer Muay Thai club in London, which confronts rising hate crime by teaching martial arts to queer, trans and non-binary people, will be shown during the Iris Prize Festival’s Opening Night on Tuesday, 8 October.

Iris Prize returns this year: Tuesday 8 October – Sunday 13 October 2024, and the Box Office is now open for general sales: 2024 Box Office - Iris Prize
