Fruits of the Spirit tells the story of Maddy and Carys who are outed to their church worship band, and have to fight to stay together, in the face of an institution that wants nothing more than to see them apart. Can they hold onto faith when it seems that their faith doesn’t want them? This is a dramatic tale of hope, perseverance, and religious intolerance – a tale that is familiar to many.
Funded by the National Lottery’s Community Fund, Iris Outreach is currently part way through the second Iris in the Community project. During the first project, they worked with organisations across Wales, and together, addressed issues faced by the LGBTQ+ community by creating short films and hosting film festivals. Participants will work alongside professional filmmakers, taking part in acting workshops, and gaining skills in filmmaking and scriptwriting.Georgia Day, the director of Fruits of the Spirit: A Gathering Film, said:
“Established in 2011, The Gathering is an LGBTQ+ church in Cardiff that wants nothing more than to provide a safe space for people that the Christian church has historically rejected: queer people, social misfits, gender transgressors. “Back in 2022, we pitched Fruits of the Spirit to the Iris Prize’s Community Outreach Programme, which funds and produces films from various community groups across Wales. We were successful in our pitch, and began making this film. “While Fruits of the Spirit is not a biographical story, it is a very personal one for many of us. Most of us have felt the sting of rejection from various churches, and, having found a loving community now, wanted to show that it was possible. This film celebrates queerness as a beautiful, tender, and holy thing – something that still needs to be said to whoever will listen.”
One of the films produced was I Shall Be Whiter Than Snow, which has played at five film festivals and continues to be the most successful Iris Community film to date.
Georgia added: “Entry is free on Saturday evening, but there will be opportunities for you to donate towards the work of The Gathering both on the night, and at this link. We want to be able to submit this to film festivals across the world and need your support in order to do so! Mae Fruits of the Spirit yn adrodd hanes Maddy a Carys sydd yn cael eu datgelu heb gydsyniad i'w heglwys, ac yn gorfod ymladd i aros gyda'i gilydd, yn wyneb sefydliad sydd eisiau dim mwy na'u gweld ar wahân. A allant ddal i gredu pan ymddengys nad yw eu ffydd eu heisiau? Dyma stori ddramatig am obaith, dyfalbarhad, ac anoddefgarwch crefyddol – stori sy'n gyfarwydd i lawer.
Dywedodd Georgia Day, cyfarwyddwr Fruits of the Spirit: A Gathering Film: "Wedi'i sefydlu yn 2011, mae The Gathering yn eglwys LHDTQ+ yng Nghaerdydd sydd eisiau darparu lle diogel i bobl y mae'r eglwys Gristnogol wedi'u gwrthod yn hanesyddol: pobl queer, pobl nad ydynt yn gartrefol yn y gymdeithas, troseddwyr rhywedd. "Yn 2022, fe wnaethom gyflwyno Fruits of the Spirit i Raglen Gwaith Maes Cymunedol Gwobr Iris, sy'n ariannu ac yn cynhyrchu ffilmiau o wahanol grwpiau cymunedol ledled Cymru. Llwyddom yn ein cais a dechrau gwneud y ffilm hon. "Er nad yw Fruits of the Spirit yn stori fywgraffyddol, mae'n un bersonol iawn i lawer ohonom. Bydd cyfranogwyr yn gweithio ochr yn ochr â gwneuthurwyr ffilmiau proffesiynol, yn cymryd rhan mewn gweithdai actio, ac yn magu sgiliau mewn gwneud ffilmiau ac ysgrifennu sgriptiau.
Un o'r ffilmiau a gynhyrchwyd oedd I Shall Be Whiter Than Snow, sydd wedi’i dangos mewn pum gŵyl ffilm ac sy'n parhau i fod y ffilm Iris yn y Gymuned fwyaf llwyddiannus hyd yma.
Ychwanegodd Georgia: "Mae mynediad am ddim nos Sadwrn, ond bydd cyfleoedd i chi gyfrannu tuag at waith The Gathering ar y noson, ac ar y ddolen hon. Rydym am allu cyflwyno hyn i wyliau ffilm ledled y byd ac mae angen eich cefnogaeth er mwyn gwneud hynny!
